Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound: Brand Names vs. the Actual Medications

Four famous brand names, two actual medications. Here's how semaglutide and tirzepatide map to the names you've heard.

Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound — the brand names are everywhere, and they make the whole thing sound more complicated than it is. Here’s the simplifying truth: there are really only two medications underneath all four names.

Two medications, four famous names

  • Semaglutide is the medication behind Ozempic and Wegovy.
  • Tirzepatide is the medication behind Mounjaro and Zepbound.

The brand names differ mainly by what they’re FDA-approved for and how they’re dosed, not by a different active ingredient.

Why the same medication has two names

It comes down to approved use:

  • Ozempic (semaglutide) — approved for type 2 diabetes.
  • Wegovy (semaglutide) — approved for weight management.
  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) — approved for type 2 diabetes.
  • Zepbound (tirzepatide) — approved for weight management.

So “Ozempic vs. Wegovy” isn’t really two medications — it’s one medication (semaglutide) with two brand identities and labeled uses.

Semaglutide vs. tirzepatide: the real distinction

The meaningful difference isn’t between brands — it’s between the two medications:

  • Semaglutide activates one hormone pathway (GLP-1).
  • Tirzepatide activates two (GLP-1 and GIP).

Both have large, high-quality trial evidence; tirzepatide has generally shown a larger average weight loss, though individual results vary and the best-tolerated option isn’t always the one with the bigger average. (We have a dedicated semaglutide-vs-tirzepatide guide if you want to go deeper.)

The safety point that applies to all of them

No matter the brand, GLP-1 and dual-agonist medications carry an FDA Boxed Warning regarding thyroid C-cell tumors and aren’t appropriate for everyone. A provider screens your personal and family history before prescribing — which is why these are prescribed inside a care relationship, not bought off a menu.

How BioPeakRx fits

At BioPeakRx, these medications are prescribed only after a Provider Evaluation, when clinically appropriate, and prepared through state-licensed U.S. pharmacies. What matters for your results is the medication and the monitoring around it — not the brand on the box.

The bottom line

Four names, two medications. Once you see that semaglutide = Ozempic/Wegovy and tirzepatide = Mounjaro/Zepbound, the whole landscape gets a lot less confusing — and the real conversation (which medication, if any, fits you) is one to have with a provider.
